PROCESS
Brainstorming
The first step was brainstorming titles for the booklet and I wanted to use a type pun because I wanted some whimsy in the project. I landed on “Type Dreams,” a play on the somewhat morbid term, "pipe dreams" to convey the ever changing trends and fads in typography. From there, the concept to add in yoga and meditation terminology was used to guide the flow of the booklet and to tie into the '“dream” aspect of the title.
Choosing Typography
In this piece I challenged myself to pair simple and clean typefaces for the main body text. I didn't want to use over-the-top typefaces to distract from the concepts seen throughout the booklet. I decided to pair a serif for the headers and a sans-serif for the body text to create a timeless yet modern feel.
Color Design
As for the color palette, I wanted to use a calming blue or purple to relate back to the yoga terminology. I could only use two colors plus tints and ended up loving this dark purplish blue color. It feels very rich and calming and the lavender tints it produced provided much needed contrast that provided clean contrast throughout the booklet.
Content
Then I used the book, type rules! by Ilene Strizver, a wonderful book about the history and development of typography, to pick out which topics I wanted to make illustrations for.
