Compile high resolution images found in the public domain
Highlight women of this era that often get overlooked by history
PROCESS
Research
The first step was researching the impressionist art movement and to find high resolution images in the public domain. Finding the images would be the main factor for the flow of the book. Fortunately, there were several art works to choose from but it did take time to compile and narrow down. Another important aspect I wanted to include was to include prominent women painting in this style that might not have as much recognition for their work.
Planning the Cover
For the sketching process I started with the cover since this would drive the color story. I picked out a few paintings that I thought would provide neutral and pleasing colors to use throughout the booklet.
During the sketching process, I was also researching what type of typography to use. I wanted type that had some flourish and drama and pair that with a modern serif for the body text.
COVER STORY
Sketches for the Cover
My idea for the the cover design was to introduce the color palette and typography to act as snapshot of the contents of the booklet.
POSSIBILITIES
Rough Drafts of Cover
Creating multiple rough drafts for the the cover was important for me to develop in order to set the overall story of the booklet and to draw readers’ attention. After some feedback I decided on the second image, Young Woman Knitting by Berthe Morisot. This piece had all the elements I wanted to showcase including:
vibrant and neutral color story to use for the entire booklet
color story that will compliment a wide array of art pieces
feature a female artist for the cover
PLANNING THE INTERIOR
Rough Sketches Page Design
Next I created some rough planning skectches for how I wanted the interior to look including:
Decorative border
Pull quotes
Feature 1 to 2 artists per page
Space for the paintings

PERSPECTIVE
Final Thoughts
Learned that I loved page design, figuring out how to fit the text and images together into a beautiful presentation was very satisfying.
Finding high resolution images that were public domain was very difficult and required a lot of time and research.
Had a difficult time fitting the cover image to the booklet size, so I created background art that would complement the painting. Then used same image as background for the interior pages and back cover.
