DESIGN SPECS

Overview

  • Redesign a poster for the movie Fruitvale Station, a film based on the death of Oscar Grant III, who was a young black man shot and killed by white police officers in Oakland, CA.

  • Create a design to work across multiple platforms including:

    • full size poster prints

    • icons for Netflix

    • banner ads used on Facebook and the web

    • create animated GIF for online ad

PROCESS

Research

First I watched Fruitvale Station and did some additional research on the film. In addition, I read articles about the death of Oscar Grant and the trial of the officers.

Mind Map and Sketches

Next I created a mind map to gather my thoughts and feelings as I was overwhelmed with how to approach such a tragic event. I assigned principles of design to the common themes seen throughout the film to generate multiple starting points for the sketching process.

Then using the mind map as a creative guide, I created several sketches exploring both abstract and literal ideas.

ORGANIZING THEMES

Mind Map

  1. Breaking down themes, characters, and motifs from the film as a starting reference.

  2. Then assigning a principle of design to represent these ideas to sketch.

EXPLORING THEMES

Sketches

  • Thumbnail sketches generated from ideas from mind map.

  • Exploring abstract and literal imagery.

  • Picked the circled thumbnail sketch to further develop.

HONING IN

Refining Ideas

  • After sketching, I decided to go in a more abstract direction to tonally capture the emotion of the movie.

  • Inspired by the poster designs of Josep Müller-Brockmann, I wanted to use a grid to create chaotic asymmetrical balance.

  • Having a dark color palette in mind, I wanted to work with greys and blacks in overlapping textures.

TAKING SHAPE

Final Design

  • Rough and textured background to capture the emotion of the film.

  • Pops of red for dramatic contrast.

  • Rigid block shapes for balance.

  • Bold typefaces in lowercase and all caps for tension.

ADVERTISING

Social Media Ads & Website Ads

The next part of the project was to create different banner adds to be used online including:

  • A Facebook ad

  • A webpage skyscraper ad,

  • A webpage leaderboard ad

  • A gif

Since the full-sized poster was created on a grid, it made the process easy to transfer the design to other artboard sizes and constraints.

Leaderboard Web Ad - 728 x 90 px

Skyscraper Web Ad - 300 x 600 px

Facebook Paid Ad - 1200 x 628 px

Animated gif of skyscraper banner ad for web pages at 300 x 600 px.
